Save Pilot Island
The Washington Island Sportsman and Conservation Club is actively trying to change the current use of Pilot Island from a rookery for the procreation of Cormorants and Pelicans to an asset used by the public for education and enjoyment. The birds have destroyed the environment, the local fisheries and devastated the cultural maritime resources that exist on the island. The white soil you see in the picture is actually bird feces. Pilot island was lush and green until 1992 when 100 cormorants began roosting on the Island. By 1994 there were 590 birds on the Island, a 79.59% increase. The accumulated bird feces changed the soil chemistry and all of the trees died in just 2 years. Today as you can see from the picture the Island is barren except for a little scrub.
